Samsung Pushes Ahead With 5G Technology: Here's What It Means For You

5G testing plans to be tested globally by tech giant Samsung

Samsung lunched an array of 5G based services this week at the Mobile World Congress show, held in Barcelona.

Aiming to make it a lot easier to set up 5G, as to the predecessor of 4G, which did take a fair amount of time and energy to set up.

“Samsung has been focused on 5G R&D for nearly half a decade, and this portfolio launch represents the culmination of a lot of hard work and industry engagement,” said Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, Executive Vice President and Head of Next Generation Communications Business Team.

“With pre-commercial deployment of our 5G products already underway in the US, we’re starting to see some of the earliest evidence of the potential for new and compelling 5G-driven services – it will be exciting to see it evolve as we move forward on our roadmap.”

One may ask, what 5G is exactly?

At the moment, there is no clear definition of what makes a connection a 5G wireless connections, since all service providers are still busy with various models of the technology.

It has been stated by the NGMN (Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance) that the newer, 5G networks will offer faster connections, greater capacities, with far less latency as compared to 4G. In other words, 5G will be faster, better, and offer more coverage, offering speeds up to 20 gigabits per second, at only a millisecond latency, that’s forty times the speed of the now days 4G networks.

SO, streaming, online gaming, downloads and uploads should be as fast as saving stuff on your PC, or working running an application on an average PC of today.

5G could lead to the beginning of “smart cities”, ultimately connecting millions of small devices together, able to provide the infrastructure to provide up to a million connections per square kilometre, from traffic lights to smart fridges, to wearable smart devices.

Our homes will then become more connected with devices are able to connect faster with one another. Transferring large files from one device to another effortlessly. The reduced latency will allow for much better response to AI applications that power self driving cars, allowing them to respond immediately to instructions like “Braking”

5G tech will necessitate progressive ICT infrastructure.

“Using a type of encoding called OFDM, the network will use new frequencies that will be able to hold a lot more data at a time.”

These frequencies will need to travel via a network of smaller cells, such as Wi-Fi routers, as a substitute of being sent via those big towers you see.

So when is all this 5G stuff happening?

AS per the NGMNA we should see 5G tech launched closer to the year 2020.
