Three injured as policeman accidentally sets off hand grenade in court

A police officer pulled the pin out of a hand grenade in order to exhibit how it worked. Three people were injured in a courtroom in Pakistan this week.

The incident occurred when the officer, (Sindh Police Department's Kalakot station) was giving evidence at a high-profile terrorism-related case in Karachi.

The grenade was part of a collection of weapons believed to have been recovered from the defendant in the trial.

As per local reports, the grenade pin was drawn by the officer after the judge had asked him how the device may possibly be detonated.

The officer assumed the grenade had been deactivated.

The Bomb Disposal Squad was alerted and the courtroom was cleared in the aftermath of the explosion. Three people were rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment.

The trial was adjourned for the rest of the day.

Sindh Home Minister Sohail Anwar Sial told reporters that it was standard procedure to deactivate any explosives before taking them into court.

Police have submitted an inquiry into how a live grenade came to be presented as evidence.
