Tomtato Plant Grows Both Tomatoes And Potatoes

A unique plant that grows both tomatoes and potatoes is to be launched in Britain for the first time.

Dubbed the “ketchup and chips tree”, the bizarre TomTato is aimed at families who have limited garden space and those living in flats.

And the wacky hybrid which has taken six years to perfect through hard graft is expected to fly off shelves when it hits Morrison’s stores on Monday.

The two-in-one which can grow to a metre high has cherry tomatoes on top and white potatoes underground.

Developed by Ipswich-based horticultural firm Thompson and Morgan, the plants are grown in the Netherlands for Morrison’s.

The supermarket chain insists the unusual plant has not been genetically modified and is the culmination of years of grafting stems to an ideal thickness for the perfect TomTato marriage of crop and taste.

Morrison’s gardening expert Glen Cooper said: “Many of our customers are green fingered. But over recent years we’ve witnessed the frustration of shoppers who have less and less space to grow their own.

“This new plant is just the solution for our shrinking gardens and will enable everyone to follow their produce from plant pot to plate.”

The veg plot in a pot costs £5 and produces tomatoes and potatoes from July to October.

It follows the launch of the “egg and chips” plant which is an aubergine and potato hybrid.
